My second full month as a Supernova Highway contestant has come and gone. Here's a quick by the numbers summary for April:
6604 NL50 hands
6682 NL100 hands
Profit: $72.80 *insert sound of singular person clapping slowly*
VPPs: 4365 - Goldstar
In all, not a stellar month by any measurement, other than I didn't lose money on the tables. My main problem was simply not getting in enough hands. Some of it was due to work, some was due to personal issues that made it unfeasible to play when I wanted, but mostly it came down to procrastination and laziness. There were several times that I could have played for a couple of hours, but instead ended up reading silly threads on 2+2 or playing non-poker related games.
I have made a conscious choice to not let that happen again in May, and I'm happy to report that I'm already half way to Silver after just today, so I have every confidence that I will be reaching Platinum Star this month, assuming I can dig my way out of this breakeven stretch.
Winning the Pokercast freeroll was a big boost to my confidence, if not to the immediate bankroll. The 50,000 FPPs that I won will likely sit in my account until I hit Supernova, at which time I'll be hitting up the Concierge for something sweet.
This month's goal is 12k VPPs. At NL100 and .4 VPPs per hand, that means I'll need 30k hands. This is obviously a lot more hands than I have been playing, but there's no point setting the bar too low. I knocked off almost 2000 hands today, so I'm on the right track.
While this update isn't very glamorous, I'm not interested in putting up fake numbers nor am I concerned about the naysayers saying there's no hope for me to hit my goals. I am posting them to hopefully provide inspiration to people like me who struggle to play as much as they should, and I'm posting them to hold myself accountable for what I have committed to. I will be making Supernova, and I hope you all continue to follow along as I do it.
Cheers,
Simon
March was our first full month on the Supernova Highway, and overall I can't complain too much about my progress. I started off the month at PLO25, and then added in some 1/2 limit (lol, minbet) in an attempt to score VPPs a bit faster while still on a short bankroll. It's been a while since I've played limit, and I've never actually played any serious amount of limit poker online, so it took a bit of adjustment.
I switched over to NL50 in the middle of March because, well, I'm a NL player and I needed to make some money. While my VPP production went down, my profits went up and in the long run, I feel this will be in my best interests. I can't make Supernova next month, so there's no point in sacrificing long term VPPs for a short-term increase in the same.
Here are some stats from this month:
1/2 Limit - 4,071 hands, -$120.25 (d'oh)
PLO 25 - 3,874 hands, -$116.55 (d'oh)
NL 50 - 11,317 hands, +$585.65 (woo hoo!)
Fairly underwhelming, but if I include all 11k hands of PLO25 that I've played since February, I'm up $295 overall, so the last 3,800 are somewhat of a regression to a normal winrate. And suckouts. Lots and lots of suckouts.
My VPP balance went from 2,311 to 7,636 for a monthly total of 5,325. I am currently a Gold star and my goal for April will be to hit Platinum. I will be taking shots at NL100 shortly, so if I can make some progress at that level, I'm confident I'll be able to hit the 10k VPPs needed for Platinum.
I'll be posting regular updates in the update thread, so check in there periodically. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them here or PM me.
I'll leave you with this bit of excitement for the month:
Cheers!

Brian Townsend was kind enough to sit through my PLO video (which you can find in its entirety >here< ) and come on the pokercast to offer some advice. I now present to you the edited version of the video that contains the hands that Brian mentions on the pokercast. Hopefully some of you will find them useful in your own game. Cheers!

The second town on our Supernova Highway journey is Goldsville. It took a few days longer than I had hoped, but it's still in time for the big WSOP satellite on Saturday, in which I shall participate and lose yet another big coinflip to be busted out. Maybe. :-)

Numbers for this week:
2500 hands of NL50
+$62
+661 VPPs
I'm not overly happy with my win rate, but I'm reviewing hands every night as well as posting hands here for feedback. The more you learn about this game, the more you realize you have so much more to learn.
Next stop, Platinum City. All aboard!
Simon
Ok, I sent off my video to Brian a few days ago, so I thought I'd post it here for y'all. It has a running commentary (with bonus off-screen tables that I commentate for a minute in the middle of the vid), and might give some of you a starting point for PLO. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to post them here!
Pot Limit Omaha, apparently. I listened to the pokercast on Tuesday morning on the off chance that Adam and Mike chose me as the other Supernova Highway winner, and ZOMG that's my name being announced! I'd like to start off by saying that I'm super excited about this opportunity and I plan to make the most of it.
The trip to Supernova started last night with some PLO25; a short 360 hand session. Net results for the first night: +$99 and 57 FPPs. Only 99,268 points to go on my journey this year! I'm looking forward to bringing everyone along for the ride and sharing my up and downs as they come. I play a variety of games, but my main games are going to be 6-max NL Holdem and 6-max PLO.
Once again, thanks to Adam and Mike for their faith in me, good luck to my colleague Steve, and we'll see you on the tables!
Cheers,
Simon
